Beginner Korean Curriculum for Kids


Overall Goal (3–6 months)
  • Recognize and read basic Korean letters (Hangul consonants and vowels)

  • Understand and use everyday Korean expressions (greetings, numbers, colors, family, etc.)

  • Form and speak simple sentences (e.g., "What is this?", "I am 8 years old.")


Weekly Curriculum (12 weeks)

Weeks 1–2: Introduction to Hangul + Basic Greetings

  • Goals: Understand the sound of Hangul, learn how to say hello

  • Content:

    • 5 consonants (ㄱ, ㄴ, ㄷ, ㅁ, ㅅ), 3 vowels (ㅏ, ㅣ, ㅗ)

    • Greetings: 안녕하세요 (Hello), 안녕 (Hi/Bye), 감사합니다 (Thank you), 안녕히 가세요 (Goodbye)

  • Activities: Greeting songs, letter flashcard games, writing your name in Korean


Weeks 3–4: More Letters + Family Words

  • Goals: Learn more consonants/vowels, talk about family

  • Content:

    • Continue learning the rest of the basic consonants/vowels

    • Family words: 엄마 (Mom), 아빠 (Dad), 누나 (Older sister), 오빠 (Older brother), 동생 (Younger sibling)

  • Activities: Draw your family and label them in Korean, matching games


Weeks 5–6: Numbers + Talking About Age

  • Goals: Count in Korean, say how old you are

  • Content:

    • Numbers 1–10: 하나, 둘, 셋...

    • Expression: "저는 여덟 살이에요" (I’m 8 years old)

  • Activities: Number bingo, flashcards, age interview game


Weeks 7–8: Colors + Expressing Likes

  • Goals: Learn basic color names, say what you like

  • Content:

    • Colors: 빨강 (red), 파랑 (blue), 노랑 (yellow), 초록 (green), 하양 (white), 까망 (black)

    • Expression: “저는 ~를 좋아해요.” (I like ~)

  • Activities: Coloring games, say your favorite food/toy in Korean


Weeks 9–10: Animals + Asking “What is this?”

  • Goals: Learn animal names, ask and answer basic questions

  • Content:

    • Animals: 강아지 (puppy), 고양이 (cat), 사자 (lion), 곰 (bear), 토끼 (rabbit)

    • Expression: “이거 뭐예요?” (What is this?), “이건 ~예요.” (This is ~.)

  • Activities: Guess the animal by sound, hide-and-seek animal game


Weeks 11–12: Review + Self-Introduction

  • Goals: Review all content, practice introducing yourself

  • Content:

    • Review all vocabulary and phrases (greetings, family, numbers, colors, animals, etc.)

    • Self-introduction: name, age, family, favorite things

  • Activities: Presenting your introduction, draw-and-write mini project
